What can I do to promote the use of the Counties?

The single most effective way to promote the existence and identity of your County is also the easiest. Include the name of your County every time you write down your postal address. Nothing has a greater effect on people's perception of where they live then their postal address. The name of the traditional County is now acceptable within any UK postal address (see Traditional County Postal Directory). It should be included between the Post Town and the Postcode. Its inclusion tells people instantly which County you live in and that you are proud to live in it.

When you hear incorrect descriptions by the media of the County of your city, town or village then write, fax or email them and explain to them which County you actually live in and how you would prefer this to be used in future. Point them in the direction of the Gazetteer of British Place Names.

Join ABC or your local County group (if one exists) and get involved in our campaigns. If no local group exists then seek to form one (contact ABC for advice and help).
